The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has electrified 64% of its network, contributing to Indian Railways’ ambitious goal of becoming the world’s largest “Green Railways.” With an overarching aim of achieving 100% electrification and net-zero carbon emissions, the NFR is diligently working to electrify the remaining un-electrified Broad-Gauge routes within its jurisdiction.
Currently, the NFR has successfully electrified 2,070.52 Route Kilometers (RKMs) out of a total network of 4,260.52 RKMs. Assam has emerged as the frontrunner in this electrification drive, boasting 1,353.23 RKMs electrified. Following closely is Tripura, with 151.59 RKMs, while smaller sections in Manipur, Meghalaya, and Nagaland are also undergoing electrification. The electrification initiative, which is being implemented by IRCON India, RITES, and NFR Construction, promises to enhance the efficiency of train operations across the northeastern states. Transitioning to electric power not only aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions significantly but also decreases India’s dependency on crude oil imports, which are costly and environmentally taxing.
Officials, including Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, Chief Public Relations Officer, have highlighted that the progress in electrification will lead to numerous benefits. By improving rail efficiency, this transition is expected to increase train frequency and punctuality, ultimately resulting in a more reliable transport system. Moreover, reducing the delays associated with changing traction will streamline operations, enhancing the flow of rail traffic and increasing train speeds. Public sentiment regarding this initiative is overwhelmingly positive. Many residents of the northeastern states are optimistic about the potential environmental benefits and improved connectivity that electrification will bring. As communities look towards a greener future, the move aligns with broader national and global sustainability goals. Electrification is not merely an infrastructural upgrade; it signifies a commitment to a sustainable future that prioritises environmental health and efficient transportation. As Indian Railways continues on this path, the expectation is that electrification will serve as a catalyst for broader changes, promoting a culture of sustainability within the transport sector.
