Chennai’s Twin Metro Tunnels Scheduled for 2026

Chennai’s ambitious metro expansion project is on schedule, with the twin tunnels designed to accommodate driverless trains expected to be completed by December 2026. This 18-kilometre stretch, constructed by Tata Projects, is a vital component of the 45.4-kilometre Madhavaram Milk Colony-Siruseri Sipcot corridor, part of the broader 116.1-kilometre Phase 2 extension. The progress of this significant infrastructure project marks a key milestone in enhancing Chennai’s metro network and its connectivity.

According to Project Director at Tata Projects, the construction has already achieved notable progress, with 7.5 kilometres of tunnelling completed. Currently, seven tunnel boring machines (TBMs) are active along the Venugopal Nagar to Kellys route. Over 60% of the work is complete, including the diaphragm walls for three stations, with work on a fourth station nearing completion. The remaining tunnelling work is expected to be finalised by December 2026, with an additional six months anticipated for the completion of ancillary work and final project delivery. The section currently under construction spans several key areas, including Venugopal Nagar to Madhavaram Milk Colony and Aynavaram to Otteri, with tunnelling from Purasaiwalkam shopping hub to Kellys scheduled to commence in two weeks. Tata Projects has engaged international experts to provide guidance on cutting tools and operational parameters tailored to the local geology. This effort reflects the project’s commitment to leveraging advanced techniques and expertise to ensure successful completion.

The successful completion of the twin tunnels for Chennai’s metro system is a critical milestone in the city’s infrastructure development. With Tata Projects spearheading this initiative, the project is set to enhance the efficiency and capacity of Chennai’s metro network. The meticulous planning and international expertise involved underscore the project’s importance in meeting the growing transportation needs of Chennai’s residents. As work progresses towards the December 2026 deadline, the enhanced metro system promises to significantly improve urban mobility and connectivity across the city.
