In Kochi, District Collector NSK Umesh has called for a comprehensive status report from various civic agencies. The directive aims to provide a clearer picture of the city’s road repair efforts and identify areas requiring urgent attention.
During a recent meeting with officials from the Kochi Corporation, the Public Works Department (PWD), and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), District collector requested detailed information on the current state of the city’s roads. Specifically, he sought an account of the number of potholes that have been addressed and those still pending repair. According to the Kochi Corporation officials, repairs have been carried out on approximately 70 roads to date. However, the extent of the repairs remains uneven across different areas of the city. While the PWD reported that the major roads under its jurisdiction are largely in satisfactory condition, it acknowledged that roads in the city’s interior areas still suffer from significant pothole issues. Estimates for repairing these interior roads have been submitted to higher authorities, pending approval.
To further aid the repair efforts, the corporation has enlisted the assistance of local police to report any potholes they encounter while on duty. This collaboration is intended to expedite the identification and resolution of road defects throughout the city. The collector’s initiative underscores a growing concern over road safety and infrastructure maintenance in Kochi. The call for a detailed report is expected to catalyse a more coordinated and efficient approach to road repairs, addressing both high-traffic routes and less prominent roads that equally contribute to the city’s overall road safety and quality.
