Dankuni Railway Station Gets Rs 18.66 Crore Upgrade

Dankuni railway station in West Bengal is being upgraded at an estimated cost of Rs 18.66 crore under the Ministry of Railways’ Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, with several passenger facilities and station infrastructure works already completed.

The 109-year-old station is located on the Howrah-Bardhaman Chord line and is administered by the Eastern Railway’s Howrah Division. It is classified as an SG-3, or Suburban Grade, station and handles an average daily footfall of more than 30,000 passengers, including incoming and outgoing travellers.

Work completed as part of the redevelopment includes the ground floor of the main station building, renovation of the building facade and construction of a porch. The circulating area and parking facilities, platform surfaces and platform sheds have also been developed, according to the zonal railway.

The station has additionally received improved lighting, new train information systems and GPS clocks. The works are intended to improve passenger access and the functioning of a station that serves as an important intermediate stop for mail and express trains travelling to and from southern and northeastern states.

Dankuni is connected to both Howrah and Sealdah, making it an important rail hub for the Kolkata metropolitan region. Its location near industrial areas and its rail links have also contributed to the development of Dankuni as an industrial centre, according to Eastern Railway. The railway connectivity has helped attract businesses and industries to the area, supporting economic activity and employment.

The redevelopment is being carried out under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, which was launched in 2022 with a long-term objective of preparing master plans for station development, improving passenger accessibility and promoting multimodal connectivity across the Indian Railways network.

The importance of Dankuni is expected to increase further with proposed freight connectivity projects. In the Union Budget 2026, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman proposed a new Dedicated Freight Corridor linking Dankuni with Surat in Gujarat. If developed, the corridor would add to Dankuni’s role as a freight and logistics hub and increase the significance of the station’s surrounding industrial region.

The current station works cover passenger-facing facilities and core station infrastructure. Further developments will be shaped by the implementation of the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme and the progress of proposed freight connectivity plans involving Dankuni.
