The Trichy Railway Division of Southern Railway has introduced QR code payment facilities at 94 of its stations, marking a significant step towards modernising ticket purchasing processes. This initiative is part of a broader move to enhance digital payment options across the railway network, offering passengers a seamless and efficient method to book tickets.
The new system allows both travellers and non-travellers to use QR codes for the purchase of reserved, unreserved, and platform tickets. Out of the division’s 151 stations, 94 have been equipped with QR code payment options, reflecting a substantial push towards digitising ticket transactions. At 38 key stations, including Trichy, Thanjavur, Kumbakonam, Mayiladuthurai, and Nagapattinam, passengers can utilise QR codes for all types of train tickets. The QR code devices are installed at both reserved and unreserved ticket counters, enabling users to complete transactions by scanning the code with their mobile phones. This system supports multiple digital payment platforms, such as BHIM, Paytm, GPay, PhonePe, and various bank wallets. Railway officials highlight that the introduction of QR code payments will significantly streamline ticket purchasing. This new facility is expected to alleviate congestion at ticket counters, especially during peak times, by reducing the need for exact change and speeding up transactions.
Additionally, it is poised to improve overall queue management and enhance passenger convenience. In addition to the major stations, the QR code payment system has also been extended to smaller stations like Sendurai, Aduturai, and Pandaravadai. This comprehensive rollout underscores the division’s commitment to integrating digital solutions and enhancing service delivery across its network. The Trichy Railway Division’s adoption of QR code payment technology represents a forward-looking approach to railway operations, aiming to cater to the growing demand for digital transactions and improve passenger experience across the board.
