Delhi Police are investigating whether three men accused of allegedly raping a 17-year-old girl at Aastha Kunj Park in south Delhi had targeted other vulnerable people at the site, while the absence of CCTV cameras inside the park has brought its security arrangements under scrutiny.
The alleged incident took place on Monday evening after the girl and a male friend were sitting on a bench at around 7.15pm. According to investigators cited by the police, the three accused approached the teenagers while posing as police personnel in civilian clothes. The boy was allegedly taken about 200 metres away, threatened and assaulted, while the girl was taken to a secluded stretch of the park.
Police said the alleged assault continued for about 40 minutes. The girl was then threatened against reporting the incident and told to leave the park. She returned to her friend at around 8pm, and the two left the site at about 8.45pm after the boy made a Police Control Room call. The call brought police personnel to the park.
The three accused have been identified as Asif and brothers Hemant Singh and Mukesh Singh. Police are examining call detail records and CCTV footage from outside or around the park, which investigators said placed the three men near the site at the time of the alleged crime. The accused have allegedly changed their accounts during questioning, police sources said. They have been sent to judicial custody for two days.
Investigators are also examining whether the accused may have been involved in earlier incidents that were not reported because of threats. Police said no previous complaints against the three had been found so far. Officers are also investigating how Asif allegedly procured a pistol and have sent the phones of the accused to the Forensic Science Laboratory after finding allegedly deleted data on two devices. These claims remain part of the investigation.
The case has also exposed an unresolved security gap inside the park. Delhi Police had alerted the Delhi Development Authority at least three times since 2025 about the need to improve security, according to the report. Police said there were no CCTV cameras inside Aastha Kunj Park. DDA sources said the horticulture department had written multiple letters over the past year seeking increased patrolling.
A DDA official said nine security guards are deployed in each shift at strategic locations, supported by supervisory and patrolling arrangements. The official also said the park’s lighting installations were functional and inspected regularly, but added that installing cameras at every location would not be practical.
Delhi Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar visited the park at around 8.15pm on Tuesday and reviewed security arrangements in and around the premises. He directed officers to strengthen security through increased motorcycle and foot patrols. Police are continuing to investigate the alleged assault, the accused men’s movements and whether the park has been linked to earlier unreported incidents.
