The Delhi government has launched four mobile labour-welfare vans to provide registration, renewals and assistance with welfare schemes at labour chowks, construction sites and other workplaces across the capital, reducing the need for workers to visit government offices during working hours.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta flagged off the Mobile Namo Shramik Seva Kendra Vans from the Delhi Secretariat on Tuesday under the government’s Seva Sankalp Abhiyan. The initiative is designed to take labour-related services closer to workers, many of whom may lose a day’s wages when they travel to offices to complete administrative procedures.
The mobile centres will provide on-the-spot registration and renewal support for workers, assistance with documentation, information about government schemes and access to digital services. They will also explain eligibility conditions, application procedures and the documents required to apply for welfare benefits.
“Workers are the foundation of Delhi’s development. Now, services will reach their doorstep instead of them having to visit offices,” Gupta said, according to the announcement reported by Millennium Post.
The government said the vans would visit locations where workers are employed or gather for work, including labour chowks and construction sites. The stated objective is to address gaps in registration and awareness, which can prevent workers from accessing schemes even when they may be eligible for support.
The four vans flagged off on Tuesday are the first phase of a larger plan. The initiative envisages one mobile van for each of Delhi’s 13 districts. The government did not provide a district-wise deployment schedule in the announcement, but said the vans would function as multi-purpose service centres for new registrations, renewals and welfare-scheme applications.
Labour Minister Kapil Mishra said the mobile outreach model would help close information and registration gaps among workers. “No worker in Delhi will remain deprived of government schemes due to lack of information or registration,” Mishra said.
The service is aimed at workers who may find it difficult to access fixed government offices because of long working hours, temporary employment arrangements or the distance between workplaces and administrative centres. By operating near work locations, the vans are intended to make access to labour services less dependent on a worker’s ability to take time away from paid employment.
The initiative also includes attention to rest areas and essential facilities for gig workers. The government said the broader mobile-service model would make labour services more accessible across Delhi, although the announcement did not specify the facilities to be provided, operating hours or performance targets for the vans.
The next stage will involve expanding the service from the four launched vans towards the proposed 13-van district-level network. The government’s stated plan is to take the mobile centres to workers across Delhi through visits to labour and employment locations.
