The postal department has launched an e-commerce network partnership in Madurai to connect farmers, farmer-producer organisations, artisans, micro, small and medium enterprises and other local manufacturers with customers, while integrating parcel logistics across the country.
Union Minister of State Chandrasekar Pemmasani inaugurated the network at a function organised by the southern region of the postal department in Madurai, according to a report by Dinamalar. The initiative is intended to give local producers access to a wider customer base through postal services and provide an organised channel for handling their orders and deliveries.
Under the first phase, the network has been linked with three farmer-producer organisations: Varahanadhi in Theni district, Mamadurai in Madurai and Kambikudi Canal in Virudhunagar district. The report did not provide details of the products to be sold through the network or the number of customers and sellers expected to use it.
Participating sellers will be able to use the postal department for several logistics functions, including parcel collection, booking, tracking and delivery. A special warehouse has been established at the Madurai head post office for the initiative. The facility is expected to serve as the local handling point for parcels routed through the new partnership.
The launch places the postal department in a broader role than conventional mail delivery. For producers operating outside large urban markets, access to reliable collection and delivery services can determine whether they are able to fulfil orders from customers in other locations. The initiative combines the department’s existing parcel network with an electronic commerce platform, although the report did not specify the technology provider, transaction system, pricing structure or delivery timelines.
The programme also reflects the logistical challenge faced by small producers seeking to sell beyond their immediate areas. Farmers, artisans and small businesses may have products available for wider markets but still require a system for receiving orders, preparing parcels and transporting them to customers. The network announced in Madurai is designed to bring those functions together through the postal system rather than requiring each seller to arrange separate collection and delivery services.
At the same event, the minister distributed account passbooks to 115 girls below the age of 10 at S. Keelapatti near Peraiyur after accounts were opened under the Sukanya Samriddhi scheme. The exercise reached a reported 100 per cent target for the identified beneficiaries.
The report also stated that 2,626 of the 6,861 villages in the southern postal region had so far been brought under the scheme. It did not specify the districts included in that count or provide a timeline for covering the remaining villages. For the e-commerce network, the next identifiable stage is the operation of the partnership with the three farmer-producer organisations and the use of the new warehouse at Madurai head post office.
