The Delhi Public Works Department will undertake a Rs 125 crore integrated upgrade of Burari Road and its drainage network, covering the full 7.1-km corridor from Outer Ring Road through Baba Colony and Nathupura to Hiranki, to improve connectivity and reduce waterlogging.
PWD minister Parvesh Verma inspected Burari Road and adjoining drainage infrastructure on Sunday and reviewed the proposed plan with senior department officials. The project will divide the road into three sections, with construction specifications varying according to the requirements of each stretch.
The 3.2-km sections between Outer Ring Road and Baba Colony, and between Nathupura and Hiranki, will be developed as bituminous roads. The 3.9-km stretch between Baba Colony and Nathupura will be rebuilt as an RCC road at an estimated cost of Rs 39 crore. A central verge is also planned along the entire 7.1-km road.
The drainage component will cover 9.3 km and is estimated to cost Rs 75 crore. The proposed network will include drains on both sides of the road between Amrit Vihar and Bengali Colony. Drainage improvements are also planned along the Swaroop Nagar More-Burari Creek stretch, where better stormwater flow is intended to address recurring waterlogging.
PWD officials have already tendered the drainage work, while the road project is expected to be tendered within 10 days, according to the department. Verma directed officials to coordinate the road and drainage works so that residents do not face repeated disruption from separate construction activities.
The minister said the objective was to upgrade the entire Burari corridor rather than improve isolated portions of the road. Until reconstruction begins, PWD will regularly sprinkle water on the affected stretches to control dust and provide temporary relief to commuters and nearby residents.
