Telangana is set for five days of widespread rain, with the India Meteorological Department forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall in several districts as a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal strengthens and moves towards the north Andhra Pradesh–south Odisha coast.
The IMD-Hyderabad said the system over the east-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Andaman Sea was likely to intensify into a depression on Monday and a deep depression over the west-central Bay of Bengal on Tuesday. It is expected to move towards the north Andhra Pradesh–south Odisha coast around September 23.
The weather system is expected to bring light to moderate rain or thundershowers at many places in Telangana on Monday and at most places from Tuesday to Friday. Heavy rainfall is likely to continue at isolated places on Saturday. The forecast also includes thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 40–50 kmph in parts of the state.
The IMD has issued a yellow warning for heavy rainfall at isolated places on Monday and Tuesday in Hyderabad, Rangareddy, Medchal-Malkajgiri, Vikarabad, Sangareddy, Medak, Mahbubnagar and Nagarkurnool. From Wednesday, the warning will intensify, with an orange alert issued for heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places in Mancherial, Karimnagar, Peddapalli, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Mahbubabad, Warangal, Hanamkonda and Jangaon.
A similar orange warning is in place for Thursday across several northern and eastern districts, including Adilabad, Komuram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Karimnagar, Peddapalli, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Mahabubabad, Warangal and Hanumakonda. The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall across Telangana on Friday, along with squally winds of 50–60 kmph at isolated places.
Rainfall has already been recorded across parts of the state. Data from the Telangana Development Planning Society for September 20, between 8.30 am and 8 pm, showed the highest rainfall at Chinthakunta in Kothapalle mandal of Karimnagar district, where 76 mm was recorded. Narayanpet in Siddipet district received 58 mm, Jukkal in Kamareddy district recorded 55 mm and Jaggasagar in Jagtial district received 53.5 mm.
Monitored locations in Kumuram Bheem, Nirmal, Rangareddy, Adilabad and Nizamabad recorded rainfall ranging from 52.3 mm to below 20 mm. Nagarkurnool also experienced heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places on Sunday.
For Hyderabad, the next 48-hour forecast indicates generally cloudy skies, light to moderate rain or thundershowers and occasional intense spells. Gusty winds of 30–40 kmph are likely, while the maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to remain around 31°C and 25°C.
The IMD’s district-level warnings will remain the key operational forecast as the system strengthens, with the next significant phase of rainfall expected from Wednesday through Friday.
