Ahmedabad is embarking on an ambitious traffic management project aimed at redesigning its most congested junctions to enhance flow and safety. Spearheaded by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), this initiative targets 104 of the city’s busiest intersections, with the YMCA and Vijay Crossroads receiving particular attention due to their unique and persistent issues.
The YMCA junction, a critical node in Ahmedabad’s road network, has been identified as a major traffic bottleneck. The primary issues at this junction include its skewed geometry, which causes vehicles from Mumatpura and Prahladnagar to intersect SG Road at an acute angle, leading to misalignment and hazardous manoeuvres. Additionally, the convergence of multiple service roads managed by both the AMC and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) exacerbates the confusion. Poor lane discipline further complicates traffic flow, with vehicles frequently obstructing one another.
To address these issues, experts propose a relatively straightforward yet effective solution. By implementing kerbing near the intersection, it is possible to realign the approaches from Mumatpura and Prahladnagar so that they meet SG Road at more perpendicular angles. Rationalising the service road openings is also recommended. This geometric adjustment is anticipated to streamline traffic flow and minimise conflicts, offering a cost-effective alternative to more complex infrastructure projects. The estimated cost for these improvements is approximately Rs 3.7 crore, a fraction of the Rs 46.2 crore allocated for an ongoing flyover project. However, there is concern that the flyover may merely shift congestion to adjacent intersections without addressing the fundamental issues at ground level.
The AMC’s redesign initiative also targets the Vijay Crossroads. Current problems here include misaligned centre lines and insufficient pedestrian infrastructure. Proposed measures include realigning the centre lines to facilitate smoother traffic flow and enhancing pedestrian amenities with wider footpaths and channelisers. Overall, the AMC’s approach underscores a commitment to pragmatic solutions that address core traffic management issues without incurring excessive costs. By focusing on strategic geometric adjustments and improved infrastructure, the project aims to alleviate congestion, improve safety, and enhance the efficiency of Ahmedabad’s road network.
