A 2.4-kilometre Khajuri Chowk service road will be reconstructed beneath the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway in northeast Delhi, with the Rs 6.70 crore project intended to ease recurring congestion for commuters travelling between Karawal Nagar, Gokulpuri, Yamuna Vihar and Bhajanpura.
The work will be carried out by the Delhi government’s Irrigation and Flood Control Department. Once completed, the service road is expected to offer two-wheelers and light vehicles travelling from Gokulpuri and Karawal Nagar an alternative to the main carriageway at Khajuri Chowk.
Khajuri Chowk and surrounding stretches frequently experience traffic congestion as vehicle pressure rises on Wazirabad Road. The existing service road is also reported to have a poor surface, potholes and waterlogging during rainfall, creating additional difficulties for motorists and affecting movement through nearby residential and commercial areas.
The reconstruction will focus on improving the road surface and reducing waterlogging, according to the report. The service road is expected to support movement between Karawal Nagar, Khajuri Khas, Yamuna Vihar, Bhajanpura and Shiv Vihar.
The proposed route is intended to separate some local and lighter traffic from vehicles using the main road. With an additional road option beneath the expressway, traffic entering and leaving the surrounding neighbourhoods could be distributed across more than one route. The project’s stated objective is to reduce pressure on the main carriageway and improve traffic flow at the junction.
The infrastructure is also significant for residents and local businesses around the junction. The reported road defects and monsoon waterlogging affect not only through traffic but also access to shops, homes and connecting neighbourhood roads. A better-maintained service road could improve local access while providing motorists with an alternative during periods of congestion.
North East Delhi MP Manoj Tiwari said efforts were continuing to improve the area and that the road would provide relief from traffic congestion. He added that improved access would benefit residents and local shopkeepers in the surrounding areas.
The announcement comes as the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway has altered traffic movement around several junctions in northeast Delhi. At Khajuri Chowk, the service road is planned beneath the expressway rather than as a separate corridor, making its condition and connection to local roads important to how effectively it serves nearby traffic.
The project is estimated to cost about Rs 6.70 crore.
