Resident doctors at Hyderabad’s Nizam Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) called off their strike on Saturday after the hospital management agreed to strengthen security arrangements following alleged incidents involving doctors. Outpatient and elective medical services resumed normal operations from Saturday morning.
The strike began after a junior resident was allegedly verbally abused and threatened by relatives of a patient. The Resident Doctors Association (RDA) held discussions with the hospital administration before agreeing to withdraw the protest, while seeking time-bound implementation of the promised measures.
NIMS management has agreed to deploy Quick Response Teams, increase the number of security personnel and establish police outposts within the hospital. The plan also includes expanded CCTV surveillance and the installation of panic buttons to improve the speed of response during emergencies or incidents of violence.
The hospital has registered First Information Reports in connection with similar incidents reported on August 31, 2026, and September 16, 2026, according to the report. A dedicated Security and Safety Committee has also been established to review existing protocols, work on preventing violence and streamline emergency responses.
The RDA submitted specific amendments during the negotiations. These include clear deadlines for implementing the security upgrades, defined response times for violent incidents and the formation of Violence or Incident Review and Counselling Committees. The association said it would continue monitoring the implementation of the measures to ensure a safe working environment for healthcare professionals.
The decision to end the strike allows regular patient services to resume at one of Telangana’s major public medical institutions. OPD and elective services are particularly dependent on the availability of resident doctors, who support consultations, procedures, inpatient care and emergency coordination across hospital departments.
The RDA expressed gratitude to the NIMS Director and hospital management for their constructive response. It said the strike was called off to prioritise patient care, while making clear that the promised security measures would continue to be reviewed by the doctors’ association.
The next steps are the implementation of the enhanced security infrastructure, the operation of the Security and Safety Committee and continued monitoring by the RDA of deadlines and response protocols agreed during the negotiations.
