Doctors at Hyderabad’s Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) called off their strike on Saturday after the hospital administration assured them of stronger security measures following an alleged threat to a junior resident. Outpatient and elective medical services resumed after negotiations between the Resident Doctors Association (RDA) and the institute management.
The strike followed an incident in which a junior resident was allegedly verbally abused and threatened by relatives of a patient. The dispute brought attention to the hospital’s existing arrangements for preventing violence, responding to incidents and protecting medical staff during tense interactions with patients and visitors.
NIMS management agreed to upgrade security infrastructure by deploying Quick Response Teams, adding security personnel, establishing police outposts and expanding closed-circuit television surveillance. The hospital also agreed to install panic buttons to enable staff to seek help during emergencies.
The administration has registered first information reports in connection with similar incidents reported on August 31 and September 16, according to Telangana Today. A dedicated Security and Safety Committee has also been established to review existing protocols, work on violence prevention and streamline emergency responses at the institute.
The RDA has sought clear deadlines for implementing the promised measures. Doctors have also demanded defined response times for violent incidents and the creation of Violence or Incident Review and Counselling Committees. These demands would establish a formal process for recording incidents, reviewing institutional responses and providing support after workplace violence.
The decision to resume services followed assurances from the hospital administration rather than the completion of the proposed upgrades. The immediate operational question for NIMS is therefore how quickly the additional personnel, response teams, surveillance systems and panic buttons will be deployed across the institute.
The episode has also placed hospital security within the wider framework of public healthcare operations. Security arrangements at a major government medical institution affect staff safety, patient access and the continuity of outpatient and elective services. At NIMS, the RDA’s call for implementation deadlines and fixed response times will now form part of the follow-up to the administration’s assurances.
The Security and Safety Committee is expected to review the institute’s current protocols and coordinate measures intended to prevent violence and improve emergency responses. The hospital’s next steps include implementing the agreed security upgrades and addressing the doctors’ demands for timelines, response standards and review and counselling committees.
