Kolkata Metro Railway is embarking on a landmark upgrade to its Blue Line infrastructure with the replacement of its steel third rail with a highly conductive aluminium alternative. This significant overhaul, the first of its kind in 38 years, is expected to substantially enhance operational efficiency and environmental sustainability.
The upgrade project is aimed at reducing energy losses by up to 84%, which is projected to result in annual savings of approximately Rs1 crore per kilometre. This transition aligns Kolkata Metro with global counterparts in cities such as Singapore, London, Moscow, Berlin, Munich, and Istanbul, all of which have already adopted similar aluminium rail systems. The replacement work has commenced at Girish Park and Maidan stations, with the initial shipment of aluminium rails having arrived from Hamburg, Germany, in late July. This first batch, covering around 5 kilometres, marks the beginning of a comprehensive two-year installation process, which will eventually see 35 kilometres of new rail laid. The subsequent shipment is anticipated in October, ensuring a steady supply for the ongoing project.
Preparatory work at Girish Park and Maidan Y sidings, which includes the use of premix concrete for the rail foundation, has been completed. Installation efforts are now underway between Girish Park and Mahatma Gandhi Road stations. The switch to aluminium rails promises several advantages. The superior conductivity of aluminium will mitigate voltage drops, resulting in improved acceleration and reduced travel times. This efficiency enhancement is expected to facilitate more frequent services and lower operational costs. Additionally, the upgrade will contribute to a significant reduction in carbon emissions—estimated at 50,000 tons over the rail’s lifetime—and will require less maintenance, thus improving air quality within the tunnels.
The transition to aluminium rails represents a substantial leap forward in Kolkata Metro’s pursuit of modernisation, offering both operational and environmental benefits. As the project progresses, it underscores Kolkata Metro’s commitment to enhancing urban transport infrastructure while addressing sustainability goals.
