Residents in Thane’s Ghodbunder area are facing continuing water shortages, with several neighbourhoods relying on tanker supplies despite the presence of municipal storage tanks and pumping infrastructure, according to concerns raised during the Thane Municipal Corporation’s general body meeting on Friday.
The issue was raised ahead of Ganeshotsav, when demand for reliable water supply becomes an immediate civic concern. Councillors said residents in parts of Ghodbunder were receiving water at low pressure and in insufficient quantities, leaving them dependent on tankers for daily needs.
Councillor Anita Thakur said many residents were being forced to rely on tanker water and described the problem as one connected to everyday life, rather than a routine supply disruption. The report did not specify the number of affected residents, the daily tanker volume or the duration of the current shortage.
Councillor Kamal Chaudhary questioned the condition of the municipal infrastructure in the area. She said storage tanks existed but did not contain water, while some pumps were not operating. The concerns raise questions about whether the problem is the availability of water, the functioning of local pumping systems, or the coordination between storage and distribution infrastructure. The municipal administration’s detailed response was not included in the report.
Councillors also questioned the approval of large construction projects in Ghodbunder when the existing population was not receiving an adequate and regular supply. Their objections placed the water shortage alongside the wider planning challenge of allowing urban development without ensuring that supporting civic infrastructure is operational and sufficient.
Ghodbunder has experienced substantial residential development, and the reported shortage affects more than the reliability of a household service. Low-pressure supply, irregular distribution and dependence on private or municipal tankers can increase the time and cost required for households to secure water. The report, however, did not provide information on tanker charges, the supply schedule, water quality testing or the specific localities facing the most severe disruption.
The presence of tanks and pumps does not by itself guarantee service delivery.
