Mumbai and neighbouring districts are expected to receive stronger rain over the weekend, with the weather department issuing a two-day yellow alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad as a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is forecast to intensify.
The warning covers Saturday and Sunday, when parts of north Konkan may experience thunderstorms and moderate to heavy rainfall. The weather department expects the system to increase rainfall activity across Maharashtra, after several days of limited rain and humid conditions in Mumbai.
The alert comes as Mumbai has experienced a pause in rainfall, accompanied by a rise in discomfort caused by hot and humid weather. The Colaba weather station recorded a maximum temperature of 32.7 degrees Celsius on Friday, which was 2.2 degrees above the average maximum temperature. The Santacruz station recorded a maximum of 31.5 degrees Celsius.
According to the forecast reported by Loksatta, the low-pressure area is expected to draw more moisture towards the region around it. This could increase rainfall across north Konkan between September 12 and 15. The forecast indicates that the coverage of rain may expand on Saturday, while most parts of north Konkan could receive moderate to heavy rainfall on Sunday.
Palghar is expected to receive heavier rain in some areas during this period. The forecast also indicates that Mumbai, Thane and Raigad may see a noticeable increase in rainfall compared with the preceding days. The yellow alert signals the possibility of weather conditions that require public and civic authorities to remain attentive, particularly in districts where intense showers can affect roads, drainage and daily travel.
The expected change in rainfall is linked to the developing low-pressure system rather than a reported local shift in Mumbai alone. Its movement and moisture intake are expected to influence the distribution and intensity of rain across the north Konkan belt.
The weather department’s forecast places the period of influence over north Konkan through September 15. Rainfall intensity, particularly across Palghar and other parts of the region, will determine how significantly conditions change after the recent spell of hot and humid weather.
