The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) is operating 584 special buses from Vasai-Virar to the Konkan region for passengers travelling home for Ganeshotsav, with services being dispatched in phases until Sunday. The arrangement is intended to provide safer and smoother travel during one of the busiest seasonal journeys from the Mumbai metropolitan region.
The special services are being operated from bus depots in Vasai, Arnala and Nalasopara. According to the report, Nalasopara will account for the largest share, with 549 buses scheduled to travel towards Konkan. The remaining buses will be operated from the other depots, although the report does not provide a depot-wise breakup for Vasai and Arnala.
Vasai, Virar and Nalasopara have sizeable populations with roots in the Konkan region. Travel to native villages rises during major festivals, particularly Shimga and Ganeshotsav, when residents working and living in urban centres return home with their families. This creates a sharp, time-bound demand for intercity transport from the western suburbs and adjoining urban areas.
The MSRTC has added these services to manage the seasonal increase in passenger traffic and support residents travelling from Vasai-Virar towards Konkan. The buses are being released in stages rather than sent out at one time, allowing the transport network to handle demand across the festival travel period.
The seasonal operation also highlights the role of state-run bus services in connecting large suburban settlements with smaller towns and villages that may have fewer direct transport options during peak travel periods. For many passengers, additional public bus services can reduce dependence on private vehicles and help manage the pressure on roads during festival departures.
To encourage organised travel, the MSRTC had also made group booking available for passengers travelling together. The facility was intended to help families and groups secure seats for the same journey and improve the response to the additional services.
The 584 buses from Vasai-Virar form part of the wider movement of passengers from Mumbai, Thane and surrounding urban areas towards Konkan for Ganeshotsav.
