The Tamil Nadu government has postponed the launch of its gold ring scheme for newborns because Chief Minister Vijay is travelling abroad, Health Minister KG Arunraj said on Wednesday, with a fresh launch date yet to be announced.

The scheme will provide a one-gram gold ring to eligible newborns delivered at government hospitals. It will cover babies born from June 22, 2026, according to details reported by the government through the minister’s statement.
When asked whether the programme would be launched on September 25, Arunraj did not confirm the date. Instead, he said the government would issue an official announcement on the schedule. The statement leaves the launch date open while the administration finalises the next public event.
The minister also addressed the quality of the gold rings that will be distributed under the scheme. He said the government would ensure that the rings meet the required standard and that only 916-hallmarked gold would be accepted after testing.
Hallmarking and testing will be central to the implementation because the scheme involves the procurement and distribution of gold articles through the public healthcare system. The minister’s assurance places responsibility on the government to verify the purity of the rings before they reach eligible families.
