The Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) on Friday shut an unauthorised weekly market near Green Tower in the Lodha Heaven area of Nilje, Dombivli, after municipal enforcement staff faced alleged physical obstruction during the action. A police case was registered at Manpada police station against the landowner, local hawkers’ representatives and two hawkers, according to a report by Loksatta – Thane.
The action was carried out by the E-ward hawker-removal squad and the civic body’s central hawker-removal team. The market was reportedly being held every Friday along Kasario Road, near Green Tower, despite repeated enforcement drives. KDMC officials said the market was being operated on private land made available for the purpose.
The case was registered on the complaint of Suresh Kamraj, the head of the E-ward hawker-removal squad. The accused named in the complaint include landowner Raj Patil, a person identified as Vinit, and two other hawkers. The allegations include obstructing municipal employees in the discharge of their duties, physically pushing staff and attempting to drive a vehicle towards them during the enforcement operation.
According to the report, municipal personnel began seizing goods from hawkers when groups of vendors allegedly confronted the squad. The landowner was accused of creating significant obstruction during the action. Manpada police intervened after the confrontation escalated, allowing the civic teams to continue the drive.
Additional Municipal Commissioner Yogesh Godse and Deputy Commissioner Prasad Borkar reached the site after receiving information about the incident. In the presence of senior officials and police personnel, the market was cleared and closed. One tempo-load of goods was seized during the operation, the report said.
The enforcement action follows directions from KDMC Commissioner Abhinav Goyal to act against unauthorised weekly markets across the municipal area. Civic officials said a meeting involving the relevant departments would be held soon to find a permanent solution and prevent the Nilje market from restarting.
The administration said further action would be taken against unauthorised weekly markets in accordance with regulations. It also warned that individuals obstructing government work would face legal proceedings. The police case and the proposed interdepartmental meeting are the next official steps identified in connection with the Nilje market.
