A 14-year-old boy died after reportedly coming into contact with a live overhead electrical wire while climbing onto the roof of a local train at the Thakurli Chole railway yard in Dombivli, according to a report citing information given by his father to Vishnunagar police.
The deceased was identified as Yagnesh Suresh Shetty, a resident of the Rajvaibhav NX housing complex in the Ganeshnagar area of Dombivli West. The incident took place on Thursday evening, when Yagnesh reportedly went to the railway yard with two friends instead of attending his usual private tuition class.
According to the account recorded by police, the yard contains local train coaches brought from the Kalyan railway yard and kept aside on railway tracks. Yagnesh allegedly climbed onto the roof of one of the coaches using the staircase and window area of the compartment. His two friends remained beside the coach and intended to take photographs of him on the roof using a mobile phone.
The boy reportedly lost his balance while trying to stand on the roof and touched a live electrical line. He was thrown from the roof to the ground after receiving an electric shock. His friends informed his family, following which his parents, residents of the housing complex and personnel in the railway-yard area reached the spot.
Yagnesh was taken to the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation’s Shastri Nagar Hospital, where doctors examined him and declared him dead. Vishnunagar police have recorded an accidental-death case based on the information provided by his father.
Senior police inspector Ramchandra Chopde, police inspector Armya Kshirsagar, assistant police inspector Abhijit More and police sub-inspector Ravindra Lone visited the railway-yard area after being informed of the incident.
The Thakurli Chole yard is described as an open area used by some residents of Ganeshnagar as a route to Thakurli railway station. Residents and young people also reportedly visit the area, while Railway Protection Force personnel patrol the location. Police action and further examination of the incident are expected to determine the circumstances surrounding the unauthorised entry and the fatal electrocution.
