Vasai-Virar Dahi Handi Leaves 16 Govindas Injured

A total of 16 Govindas were injured during Dahi Handi celebrations in Vasai-Virar, with a 13-year-old boy suffering a serious head injury after a human pyramid collapsed, according to information from the Vasai-Virar municipal medical department reported by Loksatta. The incident took place during celebrations held across the city on September 5, 2026.

The injured participants were part of teams forming human pyramids to reach and break Dahi Handis or offer ceremonial salutes at venues across Vasai-Virar. The report said several teams attempted formations between five and eight tiers high, with some pyramids collapsing after participants lost their balance.

The municipal medical department said the 13-year-old sustained a fracture to the mastoid bone behind the ear. He was admitted to hospital for treatment. The other 15 injured Govindas suffered minor injuries and received initial medical care, according to the report.

Those whose condition was described as stable were discharged after treatment. The municipal hospital and medical authorities did not provide further details in the report about the boy’s current condition, the exact venue of the serious injury or whether any other injured participants required admission.

Dahi Handi celebrations are held at multiple locations in Vasai-Virar and have grown in scale in recent years. The events feature teams from Vasai-Virar, Palghar, Mira-Bhayandar and Thane, with organisers offering prizes worth lakhs of rupees. Political parties and social organisations were among those involved in organising this year’s events, according to the report.

The festival has been recognised as an adventure sport, a development that has increased competition among participating teams. At several venues, Govinda teams attempted tall human formations in pursuit of the Dahi Handi or while giving ceremonial salutes. The injuries occurred as some of those structures fell during the celebrations.

The municipal medical department’s figure of 16 injured participants covers the incidents reported during this year’s celebrations in Vasai-Virar. The available report does not specify the number of venues involved, the safety arrangements in place at each location, or whether organisers were issued any instructions following the accidents.

The immediate medical response involved treatment at municipal facilities, with the seriously injured boy remaining hospitalised and other patients being discharged after their condition became stable.
