Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) has announced a thorough audit of potentially hazardous objects near its Metro rail installations in response to a recent disruption caused by extreme weather conditions. This proactive measure aims to enhance safety and prevent future incidents that could compromise passenger security.
The decision to initiate the audit comes after a significant disruption on Thursday morning when a tarpaulin sheet, dislodged by strong winds and heavy rain, landed on the Metro’s third rail between Ernakulam South and Kadavanthra stations. This third rail, which supplies power to the trains, was obstructed by the black tarpaulin, leading to a temporary halt in services. A vigilant loco pilot identified the obstruction and alerted the authorities, facilitating a swift resolution. Train operations were paused for approximately 15 minutes until the tarpaulin was removed and normal service resumed.
KMRL officials have since recognised the need to address the potential hazards posed by improperly secured advertisement boards, banners, and dilapidated structures near the Metro line. An official noted, “The recent incident, while not major, underscores the importance of preemptive measures to avert similar occurrences in the future. We are planning a comprehensive audit to identify and rectify objects that could potentially cause accidents.” The audit will focus on oversized billboards, advertising banners, and abandoned steel structures, which could become dangerous projectiles during adverse weather conditions. An official from the Kochi Metro Passengers Association highlighted a recent incident where iron sheets from a building’s roof were displaced over a kilometre, emphasising the risk posed by loose structures.
Further criticism has been directed at the Metro authorities for their handling of the disruption. Passengers reported a lack of clear communication regarding the service interruption, leading to unnecessary panic. “Effective communication is crucial during such disruptions,” the official stated, suggesting that the establishment of a community radio service could improve information dissemination during emergencies. Hyderabad Metro authorities have also responded to service disruptions caused by weather by removing flex boards and banners from areas near Metro installations. The upcoming audit by KMRL will be pivotal in safeguarding against future disruptions and ensuring the continued safety and reliability of Kochi Metro services.
