Pune Rail Block Puts Festival Mobility Under Strain
Pune: Railway construction in the Pune-Hadapsar corridor will disrupt train operations for more than two weeks from September 19 to October 4, with the disruption overlapping Ganeshotsav travel. The work is linked to a third railway line towards Ghorpuri Coaching Maintenance Complex and will require phased traffic blocks, placing additional pressure on a transport network already carrying substantial passenger demand.
The Pune rail block is part of pre-non-interlocking and non-interlocking work in the Pune and Hadapsar yards. These operations are required before railway systems can be integrated and commissioned safely. During the initial phase, both main lines between Pune and Hadapsar are scheduled to face blocks from noon to 5pm between September 19 and 23. The duration will then be progressively reduced. The most intensive phase comes towards the end of the programme. Hadapsar yard will see two blocks on October 3, while October 4 will bring an extended shutdown between Hadapsar and the Ghorpuri coaching complex, followed by signalling and telecommunications work. Railway services affected by the programme include mail and express trains, DEMU services and local trains. Railway authorities have planned cancellations, diversions, short terminations and changes to train timings as part of the operating arrangements. Recent service notices indicate that individual trains may also originate or terminate away from Pune, making the impact different across routes and travel dates. Passengers therefore face a moving timetable rather than a single blanket suspension.
That distinction matters during Ganeshotsav, when rail demand typically rises as residents travel within Maharashtra and visitors arrive in Pune. For daily commuters, altered services can mean longer journeys or a shift to road transport. That could add pressure to already busy corridors and increase dependence on private vehicles and taxis, particularly where convenient alternatives are limited. From an infrastructure perspective, however, the disruption is tied to a capacity project rather than routine maintenance.
