UltraTech Cement has launched a wires and cables business under the Ultravolt brand with an investment of Rs 1,800 crore, expanding the Aditya Birla Group’s presence across the construction materials value chain. The company said it aims to become one of the two largest players in the segment within five years.

Ultravolt will begin operations with a manufacturing facility in Bharuch and will be the second-largest player in the wires segment by capacity at launch, according to the company. The business adds electrical products to UltraTech’s existing portfolio, which includes grey cement, ready-mix concrete, building products and white cement.

Aditya Birla Group Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla said the wires and cables market was being driven by urbanisation, electrification and digitisation. “Wires and cables are becoming central to India’s next phase of development,” Birla said, adding that new homes, expanding energy infrastructure and the growth of data centres would support demand for the category.

The company said Ultravolt initially plans to establish a presence across more than 500 districts and 6,000 pin codes. It also plans to make its products available through more than one lakh retailers and over 5,000 UltraTech Building Solutions outlets.

Dilip Gaur, director of Ultravolt, said the business would use the manufacturing facility, a network of more than 20 warehouses, UltraTech’s distribution footprint and its relationships with individual home builders, contractors, real-estate developers and engineering, procurement and construction companies.

“Our aim is to build ambitiously through quality, technology, service and channel partnership,” Gaur said.

Sriram Rangarajan, chief executive officer of Ultravolt, said the business would take a consumer-focused approach to wires and cables, which he described as essential to residential construction but often overlooked by consumers. Safety, performance and future-readiness would be central to product development, he said.

Ultravolt is launching with home wires, flexible wires and cables for residential, commercial, industrial and infrastructure applications. The company said it plans to expand into a broader range of electrical accessories over time.

The launch marks the Aditya Birla Group’s fourth new-business foray in three years. UltraTech’s entry also places the wires and cables category within its wider Building Solutions strategy, connecting electrical products with the company’s existing relationships across construction and real estate.

The company’s immediate expansion plan is centred on activating distribution across its targeted districts, pin codes, retail network and UltraTech Building Solutions outlets.
