Seventy-five of 85 families living on railway land in Ganesh Nagar-Meghwadi have agreed to vacate their homes under the Dharavi redevelopment project, while the remaining 10 families have been given until September 10 to relocate, according to officials involved in the process.
The families had received notices on August 21 to vacate their shanties and allow demolition to proceed. The original 10-day period ended on September 1. Following discussions between senior officials and families opposing the relocation, the remaining residents were granted additional time. The authority said no action would be taken against them until September 10 on humanitarian grounds.
The latest move comes as authorities clear structures considered an obstruction to construction under the Dharavi Redevelopment Project. According to the report, 2,634 families have so far signed rent agreements, while 1,541 families have voluntarily vacated their structures in Sector 6.
An authority official said four families had earlier been evicted under police supervision after refusing to cooperate despite repeated communication and efforts to engage with them. The official said that clearing the structures would allow rehabilitation-related construction to begin more quickly.
Senior officials recently met families and their representatives who had raised objections to the relocation process. The discussions addressed several concerns and reduced uncertainty among residents, the official said. Following the meeting, more families expressed willingness to sign rent agreements, accept rent payments and other benefits under the project, and vacate their homes voluntarily.
Families that sign the agreements are being provided one year’s rent in a lump sum, relocation assistance of Rs 5,000 and one month’s brokerage. After one year, the rent will increase by 5 per cent annually and will continue until residents receive possession of their new homes. The rent is to be deposited directly into the bank account of the head of the family.
The authority has also said that residents will be provided temporary accommodation until redevelopment is completed. Counselling and efforts to address residents’ questions will continue through the authority and Adani Navbharat Developers Private Limited, the report said.
The immediate deadline for the 10 remaining families is September 10. Until then, officials have said the relocation process will proceed through continued discussions rather than enforcement action.
