Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd (TPREL) has commissioned a 100 megawatt (MW) group captive solar project in Tamil Nadu, taking its utility portfolio to 12.3 gigawatts (GW) and its operational renewable-energy capacity beyond 7 GW.
The TNGC-2 project is located at Vellalankottai and Nalandhula villages in Kayathar. It will supply renewable power to three Tata Group companies: TP Solar Ltd, Tata Electronics Private Ltd and Tata Realty and Infrastructure Ltd. The allocation includes 40.625 MW for TP Solar, 53.125 MW for Tata Electronics and 6.25 MW for Tata Realty and Infrastructure.
According to TPREL, the project is designed to generate 240.63 million units of clean electricity annually. It is expected to offset approximately 1.5 lakh tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year. The electricity will be transmitted through the Kayathar 400 kV Grid Substation, enabling evacuation from the project and delivery to the beneficiary companies.
The solar facility uses 261,660 Mono PERC bifacial modules and includes Flexible Terrain Compatible Single Axis Tracker technology. TPREL said this is the first deployment of the technology for a Tata project in India. The tracker system is designed to support energy generation across varying terrain conditions while improving operational efficiency.
The group captive structure links the project’s generation directly to the electricity requirements of the three beneficiary companies. TP Solar is Tata Power’s solar manufacturing arm, while Tata Electronics operates in semiconductors, precision engineering and advanced electronics. Tata Realty and Infrastructure is involved in real-estate and infrastructure development.
TPREL’s operational capacity now comprises more than 5.7 GW of solar assets and 1.3 GW of wind assets. The company also has another 5.3 GW under development, consisting of 2.2 GW of solar and 3.1 GW of wind projects.
The additional projects are scheduled for phased commissioning over the next six to 24 months, according to the company. TPREL’s portfolio also includes utility-scale solar, floating solar and battery energy storage system projects.
The Tamil Nadu commissioning comes as India pursues its target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030. The project’s grid connection, industrial offtake arrangements and use of terrain-compatible tracking technology form part of the company’s stated approach to expanding renewable-energy infrastructure for Tata Group operations.
