GHMC Greenlights Rehabilitation of Begumpet and RK Puram ROBs

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has approved plans for the extensive repair and rehabilitation of two vital road over bridges (ROBs) located at Begumpet and RK Puram. The decision, ratified during a recent GHMC Council meeting, comes in response to structural concerns and deterioration observed over years of service.

The Begumpet ROB, a pivotal link on the Inner Ring Road connecting areas like Somajiguda and Punjagutta with Secunderabad, was originally constructed as a four-lane bi-directional structure and expanded to six lanes in 2009. Despite these upgrades, prolonged exposure to environmental elements has taken its toll, resulting in visible wear and tear and corrosion of essential structural components such as girders, diaphragms, and the deck slab. A detailed structural assessment conducted by appointed consultants highlighted severe issues including extensive corrosion of main reinforcement bars, surface honeycombing in concrete, cracking in girders and pier caps, as well as spalling of cover concrete. Additionally, the presence of severely distressed bearing pads, clogged expansion joints, and carbonation effects on exposed concrete surfaces were noted, collectively contributing to the distressed condition of the Begumpet ROB. Recognizing the potential safety and durability implications posed by these structural deficiencies, the GHMC has allocated approximately Rs 20 crore for the comprehensive repair and rehabilitation of the Begumpet ROB. This initiative aims not only to restore structural integrity but also to enhance the longevity and operational safety of the bridge, crucial for maintaining smooth vehicular movement and ensuring public safety.

The RK Puram ROB, while less extensively damaged compared to Begumpet, requires targeted restoration efforts to address localized issues such as corrosion, expansion joint maintenance, railing repairs, and minor structural cracks. An administrative sanction of Rs 6 crore has been approved to undertake necessary repair and restoration works, underscoring GHMC’s commitment to proactive infrastructure maintenance across Hyderabad. As Hyderabad continues to evolve, strategic investments in infrastructure upkeep remain paramount to sustaining urban mobility and public safety. The forthcoming rehabilitation efforts for Begumpet and RK Puram ROBs reflect GHMC’s proactive stance towards addressing infrastructure challenges, ensuring resilient city planning and fostering sustainable growth in the region.
