Chennai Urban Greening Push Expands Across 15 Zones

The Greater Chennai Corporation has set an ambitious target to add 12 lakh trees across the city within a year, marking a major shift towards climate-responsive urban planning. The initiative comes as Chennai faces rising temperatures, heat stress, and increasing pressure on public spaces. The expansion of urban greenery is expected to influence neighbourhood liveability, environmental resilience, and long-term city planning outcomes.

The civic body has already planted around 86,000 saplings since early June as part of the broader effort. The programme focuses on developing native tree species across all 15 municipal zones, with dedicated spaces identified for nurturing saplings before they are planted in public areas.Unlike earlier plantation efforts that largely focused on annual numbers, the current approach places greater emphasis on survival and maintenance. A senior civic official said the Corporation plans to develop approximately 50,000 native saplings in each zone through parks and designated green spaces before relocating them to suitable locations.

The Corporation has identified 17 parks for raising saplings, including green spaces in Tiruvottiyur, Manali, Madhavaram, Royapuram, Teynampet, Kodambakkam, Valasaravakkam, Adyar, Perungudi, and Sholinganallur. These locations are expected to act as local nurseries supporting future tree cover expansion.Urban planners note that increasing tree cover is becoming an essential part of city infrastructure as Indian cities experience more frequent heatwaves. Trees can help reduce surface temperatures, improve air quality, provide shade for pedestrians, and support healthier public spaces. However, experts also highlight that plantation targets need to be supported by long-term maintenance systems, water availability, and monitoring. The focus on native species is significant as locally adapted trees generally require lower maintenance and contribute to biodiversity. Species being cultivated include Arjun trees, Indian almond, Golden Shower trees, Indian Tulip trees, Pongam trees, and Bead trees. The civic body has also received more than 25,000 saplings from the state forest department, which have been planted at schools and other public locations. Regular watering arrangements, including sprinkler systems, are being used to improve early-stage survival rates.

For Chennai’s expanding residential and commercial areas, the growth of green infrastructure could become an important factor in improving urban comfort. As real estate development continues across the metropolitan region, integrating trees, parks, and climate-sensitive planning will play a greater role in shaping sustainable neighbourhoods. The success of the urban greening initiative will depend not only on plantation numbers but also on consistent upkeep, community participation, and transparent tracking of tree growth. Effective implementation could help Chennai build a more climate-resilient urban landscape over the coming years.
