Hyderabad has launched a ₹107 crore lake restoration programme aimed at improving urban flood resilience, reviving degraded water bodies and strengthening groundwater recharge across key neighbourhoods. The initiative marks another step towards integrating ecological restoration with urban infrastructure planning as the city confronts increasing climate-related challenges and rapid urbanisation.
The Hyderabad lake restoration programme will rejuvenate four lakes spread across Ibrahim Bagh, Moosapet, Puppalaguda and Kapra, covering nearly 311 acres. The project combines ecological rehabilitation with public space development, seeking to restore the lakes’ environmental functions while creating accessible recreational areas for surrounding communities. Officials said the restoration works will focus on removing accumulated silt, improving water quality and developing efficient inlet and outlet systems that allow stormwater to flow naturally during heavy rainfall. Strengthening these hydraulic connections is expected to reduce localised flooding while enhancing groundwater recharge across the surrounding urban landscape. The investment includes separate allocations for Ibrahim Pedda Cheruvu, Kamuni Cheruvu, Bhagirathamma Cheruvu and Kapra Cheruvu, reflecting the varying size and restoration requirements of each waterbody. Beyond engineering interventions, the project also proposes landscaped walking tracks, children’s play areas, open gyms, seating spaces and, where feasible, boating facilities to encourage greater public use of restored lakes.
Urban planners have increasingly recognised lakes as critical components of climate-resilient cities rather than standalone recreational assets. Healthy urban water bodies help capture stormwater, reduce flood peaks, moderate urban temperatures, support biodiversity and replenish groundwater reserves, making them essential natural infrastructure within expanding metropolitan regions. The Hyderabad lake restoration initiative also highlights the importance of long-term maintenance. Environmental experts note that lake rejuvenation projects deliver lasting benefits only when supported by effective sewage management, protection of feeder channels, regular desilting and strict monitoring to prevent future encroachments or pollution.
Officials have also emphasised quality control during implementation while encouraging local communities to participate in monitoring and safeguarding restored lakes. Public involvement is increasingly viewed as an important factor in maintaining urban water bodies after restoration work is completed. As Hyderabad continues to experience rapid urban growth and changing rainfall patterns, integrated lake conservation is expected to play a larger role in reducing flood vulnerability while enhancing environmental sustainability.
