As Hyderabad endures another summer marked by prolonged spells of intense heat, urban planners and climate experts are drawing attention to a growing challenge that extends beyond seasonal weather patterns. While official meteorological records indicate that temperatures remain broadly aligned with historical averages, the lived experience of residents tells a different story. Across the city, rising discomfort levels are increasingly being linked to the expanding Urban Heat Island effect, a phenomenon closely associated with rapid urbanisation and changing land-use patterns.

The issue has emerged as a significant urban governance concern in one of India’s fastest-growing metropolitan regions. Outdoor workers, public transport users, street vendors, traffic personnel and residents of densely built neighbourhoods are among those bearing the greatest burden as daytime temperatures regularly approach 40°C during peak summer months. Weather scientists note that current temperature readings are not necessarily unprecedented. However, the city’s built environment has altered how heat is absorbed, stored and released. Large expanses of concrete, asphalt roads, flyovers, commercial complexes and high-density residential developments retain solar radiation throughout the day and release it gradually after sunset. As a result, many neighbourhoods experience elevated night-time temperatures, reducing natural cooling and increasing heat exposure for residents.

The challenge is compounded by the loss of natural cooling systems that historically moderated urban temperatures. Environmental experts point to shrinking green cover, disappearing open spaces and the degradation of water bodies as key factors reducing the city’s resilience to extreme weather. Lakes that once functioned as local climate regulators have, in many cases, been affected by pollution, encroachment or fragmented ecological management. The resulting Urban Heat Island effect has implications far beyond thermal discomfort. Public health professionals report growing concerns around heat-related illnesses, including dehydration, heat exhaustion and heat stroke, particularly among vulnerable populations. Increased cooling demand also places pressure on electricity networks, while higher evaporation rates and declining groundwater recharge can intensify urban water stress.

Urban economists warn that unchecked heat exposure carries economic costs as well. Reduced outdoor productivity, higher healthcare expenditures and increased energy consumption can affect both households and businesses. In rapidly expanding cities, climate adaptation is increasingly becoming an economic necessity rather than solely an environmental objective. Experts argue that mitigating the Urban Heat Island effect requires a combination of policy interventions and planning reforms. Expanding urban tree cover, restoring lakes, preserving open spaces, encouraging reflective building materials and integrating climate-responsive design into future developments are among the measures frequently recommended. Equally important is ensuring that new infrastructure projects incorporate heat resilience from the planning stage. As Hyderabad continues to grow, the challenge will be balancing economic expansion with environmental sustainability. The city’s response to rising urban heat may ultimately determine how effectively it can protect public health, maintain resource security and build climate-resilient neighbourhoods capable of withstanding increasingly complex environmental pressures.
