Bengaluru Heatwave Alert Raises Summer Preparedness Concerns

Bengaluru and several parts of Karnataka were facing a heightened summer heat risk after the India Meteorological Department projected above-normal temperatures through March to May 2026. The outlook pointed to repeated heatwave spells in parts of the state, raising concerns for public health, outdoor work, energy demand and the ability of cities to provide adequate protection during prolonged hot periods.

The Bengaluru heatwave alert is particularly significant because the city’s relatively moderate climate has historically offered some protection from extreme summer conditions. However, rising built-up density, extensive paved surfaces and declining natural cooling can make heat more difficult to escape, particularly in densely developed neighbourhoods. The IMD’s February outlook indicated that maximum temperatures across Karnataka were likely to remain above normal during the March-May period. It also identified north interior Karnataka as particularly exposed to severe heatwave conditions, with spells potentially lasting several days. Coastal Karnataka was assigned a 65-75% probability of above-normal maximum temperatures in the seasonal assessment cited in the report.
For Bengaluru, the immediate forecast at the time indicated maximum temperatures of around 31-32°C, with minimum temperatures near 18°C. That relatively modest short-term range did not remove the longer-term concern: seasonal heat can accumulate through repeated hot days, while warmer nights reduce the body’s opportunity to recover.

The Bengaluru heatwave alert also has an economic dimension. Construction workers, delivery personnel, street vendors, transport workers and others whose livelihoods depend on outdoor activity can face reduced working capacity during peak heat. Businesses may also experience higher cooling and electricity costs as households and commercial buildings rely more heavily on fans and air-conditioning. Urban planners say the response cannot depend solely on individual precautions. Heat resilience increasingly requires shaded pedestrian routes, accessible drinking-water points, cooler public spaces, tree cover and building designs that reduce indoor heat gain. These measures can also improve everyday liveability without requiring energy-intensive cooling everywhere. The challenge is particularly relevant for new real estate and infrastructure development. Projects that replace permeable land and vegetation with extensive concrete surfaces can intensify local heat exposure unless cooling, drainage and landscape measures are incorporated from the planning stage.

The IMD’s seasonal assessment provides an early warning rather than a prediction of conditions in every locality. Later forecasts can alter the intensity and location of heatwave conditions.For Bengaluru, the priority is therefore to treat extreme heat as an urban planning issue as well as a weather event. Strengthening neighbourhood-level preparedness before temperatures peak could help protect vulnerable residents while making the city’s expanding built environment more climate resilient.
