Punjab Halwara Airport Set For First Delhi Flight

Commercial air connectivity for central Punjab is expected to enter a new phase in May, with the first scheduled Delhi flight from the newly developed airport at Halwara likely to begin operations within weeks. The development marks a major shift for Ludhiana and surrounding industrial districts that have long depended on distant airports for regular air travel.

The new airport, developed as a civil terminal alongside the existing air force base, has been planned as a long-term replacement for the smaller Sahnewal airport that struggled to handle growing passenger demand and larger aircraft. The facility is located about 30 km from Ludhiana city and is designed to accommodate narrow-body aircraft such as Airbus A320 and Boeing 737-class planes, which significantly expands the region’s aviation capacity compared to the older airport. Recent news reports indicate that preparations on the ground have intensified ahead of the start of commercial operations. Local authorities have been carrying out last-mile civic works, traffic arrangements and infrastructure upgrades in the surrounding areas to ensure the airport is operationally ready. The terminal building itself has already been inaugurated, and flight services are now expected to begin in phases, starting with a domestic route connecting the region to the national capital. The decision to begin operations with a Delhi route reflects broader trends in India’s aviation sector. Tier-2 industrial cities typically see their first new connections linked to major hub airports rather than multiple direct destinations.

Delhi serves as the country’s largest domestic and international aviation hub, which means passengers from Ludhiana and neighbouring districts will gain easier access not only to the capital but also to onward connections across India and overseas markets. From an urban-development perspective, the start of flights from Halwara airport is expected to have a wider impact beyond travel convenience. Ludhiana is one of northern India’s largest manufacturing centres, with strong demand for business travel from textile, bicycle, engineering and auto-component industries. For years, companies in the region have relied on airports in Chandigarh, Amritsar or Delhi, which added travel time and logistics costs. Direct air connectivity is therefore likely to influence both business mobility and future investment decisions. Urban planners also see the project as part of a larger shift in how infrastructure is being distributed across India’s urban system. Instead of concentrating aviation infrastructure only in major metros, newer airports are increasingly being developed near mid-sized industrial cities where demand is rising rapidly but connectivity remains limited. The Halwara project — built on an existing air force base with a new civil terminal — is one example of how that strategy is being implemented in northern India.

If the first Delhi flight begins as expected in May, it will mark the operational start of a project that has been delayed for several years. The next phase will depend on how quickly passenger demand builds and whether additional routes are added. For the wider region, however, the significance lies less in the first flight itself and more in the long-term transformation of connectivity that the airport could enable.
