Shimla Chandigarh Route Gets New Prepaid Taxi Rates
Authorities in Himachal Pradesh have revised the official Shimla Chandigarh taxi fare under the state’s pre-paid taxi system, introducing a new rate structure for travellers using regulated taxi counters at the Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT) in Shimla.
The move is aimed at standardising inter-city fares and preventing overcharging on one of the region’s busiest travel routes linking the hill capital with the Chandigarh metropolitan region. Under the updated pricing framework, passengers travelling from the ISBT in Shimla to Chandigarh city will pay ₹3,000 for a standard taxi and ₹5,000 for a maxi cab. Trips from Shimla to Chandigarh International Airport will cost ₹3,500 for a taxi and ₹5,500 for a maxi vehicle under the revised Shimla Chandigarh taxi fare structure.
Transport officials say the revised fares fall under provisions of the Himachal Pradesh Pre-Paid Taxi Scheme, which governs point-to-point services operating from authorised counters. The scheme is designed to offer fixed, transparent pricing while ensuring passengers—particularly tourists unfamiliar with local transport systems—can access regulated taxi services without fare disputes. The Shimla–Chandigarh corridor is among the most frequently travelled road routes in northern India, connecting the hill state’s administrative centre with a major urban gateway that hosts the region’s primary airport and railway network. Thousands of tourists and residents rely on taxis and buses to travel between the two cities, especially during peak tourist seasons.
Urban mobility experts say the updated Shimla Chandigarh taxi fare reflects a broader shift towards structured pricing in regional transport systems, particularly in tourism-dependent hill economies. Fixed fares through prepaid counters are increasingly being used to regulate inter-city taxi services, improve passenger confidence and create a more organised transport ecosystem in high-footfall destinations. Authorities note that the revised rates will be implemented through authorised pre-paid taxi booths at the Shimla bus terminal, where passengers can book taxis with official receipts before boarding vehicles. The policy also addresses operational costs faced by taxi operators, including fuel prices, vehicle maintenance and long-distance driving conditions along mountainous terrain.
