Kolkata City Streets To Undergo Extensive Resurfacing

Kolkata is preparing for a major overhaul of its road infrastructure as the municipal corporation plans to expand its road smoothening operations across critical city corridors. The initiative aims to reduce the persistent undulations that have long challenged motorists and two-wheeler riders, especially along high-traffic avenues and the EM Bypass.Urban planners indicate that the project reflects a broader shift toward more resilient and inclusive city transport infrastructure. “Frequent patchwork repairs have left many stretches uneven, posing safety risks and slowing traffic,” said a senior civic official. By introducing additional milling machines, the city hopes to systematically address these problematic zones rather than relying on stopgap fixes.

The municipal roads department intends to deploy five new road milling machines over the next six months, augmenting the existing fleet of four. Early phases will focus on high-density stretches including Chittaranjan Avenue, APC Roy Road, Gariahat Road, Tollygunge Circular Road, and DH Road. Sections of the EM Bypass, notably between Ruby and Ajaynagar intersections, will also undergo priority resurfacing. Officials stressed that these interventions are designed not only to smooth driving surfaces but also to reduce vehicle wear and improve safety on accident-prone segments.

Previous phases of the smoothening programme have targeted areas such as Bhupen Bose Road, AJC Bose Road, and Gurusaday Dutt Road, which saw tangible improvements in traffic flow and commuter experience. Analysts note that systematic road upgrades can have ripple effects on urban mobility, enabling faster movement of goods and easing congestion in commercial hubs. “A consistent road surface supports more efficient public transport and reduces fuel consumption, contributing indirectly to lower emissions,” an urban infrastructure expert observed. The project also signals an increasing alignment of civic infrastructure with climate-resilient urban planning. Smooth, well-drained roads mitigate waterlogging during heavy rainfall and reduce long-term maintenance costs. In addition, equitable coverage across both central and peripheral corridors demonstrates a commitment to inclusive urban development, where residents from diverse neighbourhoods benefit from safer, more reliable road networks.

Economically, smoother road networks can enhance local business activity by reducing transit delays and improving accessibility. Real estate and commercial analysts expect that areas along the upgraded corridors may see a modest boost in property attractiveness due to improved connectivity. The municipal authority has underscored that the EM Bypass, a critical arterial link spanning the city’s eastern periphery, will eventually be upgraded along its full 22-kilometre stretch. While initial work will prioritise the worst-affected sections, long-term planning seeks a comprehensive and continuous roadway solution that integrates traffic safety, commuter convenience, and climate resilience.
