Private Bus Operators Given Deadline To Upgrade Safety Features
The transport department of Rajasthan has directed private bus operators across the state to review and upgrade safety features in their vehicles by October 31, as part of a broader effort to strengthen passenger safety and enforce regulatory compliance.
The directive has been issued under a statewide road safety campaign aimed at ensuring that commercial passenger vehicles meet mandatory safety standards. Authorities have instructed operators to inspect key safety systems and rectify any deficiencies before the deadline, after which enforcement drives and penalties will be imposed on non-compliant vehicles. Officials said the initiative will focus on critical safety components including emergency exits, fire extinguishers, and compliance with the national Bus Body Code, which regulates the structural design and safety features of passenger buses. Transport authorities have also instructed operators to remove rooftop luggage carriers and unauthorised sleeper modifications that violate vehicle safety guidelines.
The review process is expected to take place in two phases. In the first stage, transport department teams will conduct inspections through Regional Transport Office flying squads between October 27 and October 31. These teams will examine vehicles to verify whether safety standards have been implemented. The second phase will involve stricter enforcement measures, including legal action against buses that fail to meet the requirements. Authorities warned that vehicles found violating safety norms could face penalties such as fines, suspension of registration certificates or even cancellation of permits. In severe cases, buses may be seized or forced to revert to their original specifications if they have been illegally modified.
The transport department has also asked private operators to submit compliance reports confirming that their vehicles meet prescribed safety norms before inspections begin. Officials believe this step will help ensure better accountability among transport operators and encourage voluntary compliance. Road safety experts note that such measures have become increasingly important as private bus services play a major role in intercity travel across Rajasthan and neighbouring states. With thousands of passengers using these services daily, maintaining strict vehicle safety standards is considered essential to reduce accident risks and improve passenger confidence.
The initiative follows a series of concerns raised nationwide about safety lapses in private transport vehicles. Investigations into several major bus accidents in recent years have highlighted issues such as faulty wiring, blocked emergency exits and illegal structural modifications that can worsen the consequences of accidents or fires. By enforcing stricter safety checks, transport authorities aim to create a more accountable regulatory environment for private bus operators. Officials say sustained inspections and stronger enforcement will be necessary to ensure that safety standards are maintained even after the initial compliance deadline.
