Hyderabad GHMC Clears Multi Corridor Road Push

A sweeping set of road and junction upgrades cleared by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation signals a renewed push to unclog some of the city’s most congested corridors, even as questions emerge around land acquisition, drainage resilience and long-term mobility planning.

The civic body has granted administrative approvals for a mix of flyovers, grade separators, underpasses and road expansions across central, western and southern Hyderabad. Officials describe the package as part of a phased strategy to reduce intersection delays and improve travel times in high-density traffic zones.Among the key interventions is a four-lane, one-way corridor planned at Rasoolpura Junction, which will involve acquisition of over two dozen properties. A new down ramp connecting the Owaisi Junction flyover towards Santosh Nagar has also been sanctioned to address persistent merging conflicts and queue spillbacks during peak hours.

In western Hyderabad, traffic engineering works at NFCL and TV9 junctions have been cleared, alongside major grade separator projects at Rethibowli and Nanalnagar. These locations sit along growth corridors linking residential catchments with the IT and commercial districts. Civic officials estimate that more than 100 properties may be required to facilitate alignment corrections and carriageway expansion in these areas.Further south, a parallel Road Over Bridge has been approved near Falaknuma to ease rail crossing delays, while the ageing Fatehnagar flyover is slated for structural upgrades. The corporation has also sanctioned reconstruction of the Afzal Sagar Nala, integrating stormwater channel improvements with adjacent road infrastructure. Urban hydrology experts note that such drainage upgrades are critical as Hyderabad faces more frequent extreme rainfall events linked to climate variability.

A six-lane grade separator has been cleared along the Mailardevpally–Shamshabad–Katedan corridor, a key approach to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. Transport planners say this stretch carries a mix of freight, airport-bound traffic and industrial movement, making capacity augmentation a priority. However, mobility analysts caution that grade separation must be integrated with public transport planning to avoid locking the corridor into car dependency. In addition to project-level approvals, the corporation has earmarked ₹500 crore each for infrastructure development in emerging administrative zones covering Cyberabad and Malkajgiri. These allocations are expected to support road strengthening, junction redesign and ancillary civic works in rapidly urbanising neighbourhoods.

While the approvals mark a significant capital commitment, implementation will hinge on timely land acquisition and environmental clearances. Urban policy specialists argue that Hyderabad’s next phase of infrastructure growth will require balancing speed with sustainability — ensuring that road expansion is complemented by drainage resilience, multimodal transport integration and preservation of neighbourhood liveability. As construction timelines firm up, the city’s ability to synchronise mobility upgrades with climate-sensitive planning will determine whether these investments deliver durable congestion relief or short-term gains.
