Hyderabad’s western growth corridor is set for a major utilities upgrade, with authorities planning a 226 million litres per day bulk supply system and a parallel sewerage facility to serve the rapidly urbanising Neopolis township near Kokapet. The move signals a shift toward long-term infrastructure provisioning in one of the city’s most active real estate zones along the Outer Ring Road.
The proposed Neopolis water infrastructure is designed to meet the projected needs of a greenfield township expected to accommodate up to 1.28 million residents over the coming years. Urban planners say provisioning for peak population, rather than current occupancy, is critical in avoiding the service deficits that have burdened several Indian metropolitan expansions.According to senior water board officials, the project includes large-diameter mild steel gravity mains, a nine-million-litre circular sump, pumping facilities, service reservoirs, and a 45 MLD sewage treatment plant (STP). The combined investment is estimated at nearly ₹300 crore. Additional land has been earmarked to expand beyond existing reservoir capacity in the area, enabling integrated water storage and distribution functions within a single service cluster.
A key feature of the Neopolis water infrastructure is its elevation advantage. The selected site sits at nearly 600 metres above sea level, allowing treated water to flow by gravity to downstream neighbourhoods. Engineers note that gravity-fed systems significantly reduce dependence on energy-intensive pumping, lowering operational expenditure and carbon emissions over time. In a city where electricity costs are a major component of utility budgets, this design approach aligns with climate-resilient planning goals.The scheme will also integrate with the broader Godavari drinking water augmentation strategy, under which additional raw water is being drawn to strengthen metropolitan supply security. Urban development experts view this as part of Hyderabad’s wider attempt to future-proof water systems against rising demand, erratic monsoons and climate variability.
Beyond Neopolis and Kokapet, improved storage and balancing capacity is expected to stabilise supply to established localities in the central and southern parts of the city. Planners argue that cross-linking new reservoirs with legacy distribution networks can help address pressure imbalances and reduce tanker dependency, particularly during peak summer months.However, infrastructure specialists caution that rapid real estate absorption must be matched by phased commissioning of treatment and sewerage assets. Without timely delivery, high-density residential towers risk relying on temporary arrangements that strain groundwater and increase wastewater discharge.As Hyderabad continues to attract investment in technology parks, premium housing and mixed-use districts, the success of the Neopolis water infrastructure will depend not just on engineering execution, but on synchronising land use, utilities and environmental safeguards. In a climate-constrained future, cities that plan core services ahead of occupancy are more likely to deliver equitable and reliable urban growth.
