Lucknow Adds Extra Buses To Manage Holi Travel Surge

LUCKNOW — In anticipation of heightened passenger movement due to Holi festivities, the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) has announced additional bus services in and around Lucknow to manage the surge in travel demand from February 28 to March 9.

The move aims to reduce waiting times, support festive mobility and improve the reliability of long-distance and inter-city transport as residents travel for celebrations, family visits or return journeys. The expansion comes at a time when seasonal travel patterns traditionally place pressure on transport networks, stretching capacity on key routes linking the capital with eastern Uttar Pradesh, Kanpur, Delhi and other major nodes. UPSRTC’s deployment strategy includes increasing service frequencies and putting the maximum number of buses into service to clear the festive rush — a directive emphasised by the Transport Minister.

Each additional bus will be equipped with electronic ticketing machines and, for long-distance trips, two drivers to ensure schedules are maintained and driver fatigue is mitigated. These operational enhancements reflect a broader push to modernise passenger experience and enforce safety measures during peak travel periods when service reliability becomes critical. Beyond service expansion, transport officials are focusing heavily on road safety enforcement. Field officers will conduct regular breathalyser tests for drivers and carry out special inspections along major state and national highways that serve as primary conduits for inter-city travellers. In cases where buses are found violating safety protocols, alternative transport arrangements are to be provided to protect passenger well-being.

Complementary coordination with district administrations is also part of the strategy, ensuring that travellers have access to clean, hygienic food and potable water at bus stations and important stops — an often overlooked aspect of mass mobility during festival peaks. Additionally, stringent checks will be conducted to restrict the carriage of gas cylinders and other inflammable items on board, bolstering safety standards for the festive travel season. Urban mobility analysts note that such preparatory action is crucial to managing periods of elevated travel demand, particularly in a city the size of Lucknow where population growth and regional linkages have steadily increased transit pressure. Seasonal mobility peaks can strain public systems if not addressed with proactive capacity planning, data-driven scheduling and heightened safety oversight.

Beyond short-term service additions, the expansion reflects broader trends in how public transport agencies are adapting to fluctuating demand, using digital ticketing and operational redundancy — such as dual drivers — to maintain continuity. Safety measures, including breathalyser tests and vehicle inspections, align with regional and national priorities to reduce road accidents and enhance passenger confidence in public transport. For commuters, the additional buses offer tangible benefits: shorter waits at stations, more predictable travel options and a reduction in overcrowding on key routes. In a festival season that unites families and friends across cities, accessible and efficient transport becomes a critical part of social cohesion and economic activity.

As festive travel continues through early March, officials will monitor ridership patterns and adjust services dynamically. The goal is not only to manage the immediate rush but also to strengthen the city’s transport system’s responsiveness to evolving travel behaviours in a growing urban region.
