200-Acre Kathajodi Riverfront Project Awaits Approval

The Cuttack Development Authority (CDA) has unveiled an ambitious plan to transform a 200-acre stretch along the Kathajodi riverbank near Baranga tehsil into a vibrant, eco-friendly urban space.

This initiative aims to enhance the city’s green cover, provide recreational facilities, and promote sustainable urban development.

The CDA’s proposal has been approved in principle and is now awaiting final sanction from the state government. Once approved, a detailed project report (DPR) will be prepared to guide the development process. In line with environmental best practices, the project will adhere to guidelines set by the National Green Tribunal (NGT), Water Resources and Forest departments, and the State Pollution Control Board.

Vice-Chairman of the CDA, Anam Charan Patra, emphasized the project’s commitment to sustainability. Over 60% of the designated area will be dedicated to plantation, aiming to increase the city’s green cover and improve air quality. The remaining land will be developed to include parks, open gyms, and playgrounds, providing residents with accessible recreational spaces.

This development is part of a broader effort to enhance Cuttack’s urban infrastructure. The expansion of the Kathajodi ring road to six lanes is underway to facilitate better connectivity and accommodate growing traffic demands. Additionally, the construction of two new bridges over the Kathajodi River is planned to further improve transportation links between Cuttack and Bhubaneswar.

The CDA’s initiative reflects a growing recognition of the importance of integrating green spaces into urban planning. By focusing on eco-friendly development, the project aims to create a sustainable and livable environment for Cuttack’s residents. Pending government approval, the Kathajodi riverfront development is poised to become a model for future urban projects in the region.

Cuttack’s Kathajodi riverfront development plan represents a significant step towards sustainable urban growth. By prioritizing environmental sustainability and community well-being, the CDA is setting a precedent for future urban development projects in Odisha. As the project progresses, it will be essential to monitor its implementation to ensure that it meets the city’s evolving needs while preserving its ecological balance.
