The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has set December 2027 as the completion deadline for the 206-metre Yari Road-Lokhandwala flyover across Kavthe Creek in Andheri West, a project expected to cut travel time between parts of Versova and Lokhandwala from about 30 minutes to 10 minutes.
Additional municipal commissioner (projects) Abhijit Bangar inspected the construction site near Amarnath Tower on Monday and directed officials to complete the bridge within the announced deadline, according to the Times of India. The flyover is being built as part of the development of an 18.3-metre-wide Development Plan road on both sides of Kavthe Creek.
The new link will connect Yari Road, Panch Marg, Versova and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Nagar with Lokhandwala Complex and Samarth Nagar. The project includes a 110-metre main bridge and approach roads measuring 40 metres on the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Nagar side and 56 metres near Amarnath Tower. The bridge itself will be 11 metres wide.
The central structure will use a 110-metre single-span steel basket-handle arch, with tension rods connecting the arch to the bridge deck. Its foundation will consist of reinforced cement concrete pile foundations, while RCC abutment walls and caps will support the structure.
The connection is intended to provide a more direct east-west route across the creek for residents and traffic moving between Yari Road, Versova, Lokhandwala and adjoining neighbourhoods. At present, the municipal estimate places the journey time between the connected areas at around 30 minutes. Once the bridge opens to traffic, the BMC expects that time to fall to approximately 10 minutes.
The project is also being positioned as an additional east-west connection as larger transport projects in the western suburbs progress. Civic officials said the flyover could serve as an alternative route after the proposed Versova-Bandra Sea Link and the northern extension of the Mumbai Coastal Road become operational.
The project’s function extends beyond the bridge deck itself. Its completion depends on the associated Development Plan road links and approach stretches that will connect the structure to the surrounding neighbourhood network. This means the practical benefit to commuters will depend on the full connection between the bridge, Yari Road, Panch Marg, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Nagar and Lokhandwala roads.
The BMC has not provided in the supplied report a revised construction cost, the project’s original commencement date, or details of any traffic diversions linked to the remaining construction work. The immediate milestone communicated by the civic administration is the December 2027 completion deadline following the site inspection by the municipal projects department.
