The state government of Meghalaya is actively engaging with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to assess the feasibility of expanding Shillong airport, signalling potential infrastructural developments in the region.
Efforts to enhance the airport’s capacity and facilities come amidst growing demand for improved air connectivity and infrastructure in the north-eastern region of India. With Shillong airport serving as a vital gateway to the picturesque state of Meghalaya, the initiative holds promise for bolstering regional connectivity and stimulating economic growth. “And if not, there is also the choice of us looking for more spaces for airports within the state,” Lyngdoh said. Referring to a recent notice from the High Court of Meghalaya, Lyngdoh said, “I think you must have noticed just last week the High Court had made a strong plea for airlinks between Shillong and Bhopal to enable the judges of Meghalaya HC to travel to and from Shillong and Bhopal, and therefore ease and cut down on the time and expenditure while traveling.”
“So, we are very optimistic and we should be in a position to review matters once election results are declared and MCC is lifted,” he added. The collaboration between the state government and AAI underscores a proactive approach towards addressing the burgeoning needs of the aviation sector in Meghalaya. By exploring avenues for expansion, authorities aim to accommodate rising passenger traffic and accommodate larger aircraft, thereby catering to the evolving travel demands of residents and visitors alike.
