Ahmedabad is taking significant strides towards hosting the 2036 Olympics with the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) launching an ambitious plan to develop world-class sports infrastructure. Under the banner “Vision Ahmedabad 2036”, AMC has invited proposals from consultants to craft a city-wide strategy that includes the development of state-of-the-art sports venues. In partnership with the Gujarat state government, which has already appointed two international consultants, the initiative reflects a ‘double engine’ push to fast-track infrastructural developments across the city, ensuring it meets global competition standards.
The comprehensive development strategy extends beyond sports. The AMC is set to address transportation and traffic challenges that have escalated over the past five years, with congestion levels increasing by 25% since 2018. The upcoming sports precincts will be supplemented by upgraded public transport systems, and a sectorial plan under the “Viksit Bharat 2047” initiative will integrate economic growth, urban transport, and essential services. Two international consulting firms have submitted proposals, and a joint venture is expected to be finalised soon, driving the transformation towards a more sustainable and future-ready Ahmedabad.
Focusing on sustainability, the AMC’s long-term vision includes creating climate-resilient sports infrastructure that prioritises energy efficiency and green practices. Ahmedabad’s annual carbon emissions have increased by 14% over the last five years, making sustainable urban planning critical. The Olympic-ready infrastructure will be built with renewable energy sources and eco-friendly materials to align with global environmental goals, ensuring that the city contributes to India’s broader climate commitments. The urban plan will also focus on addressing public health, air quality, and the enhancement of green spaces to improve liveability.
From an urban and civic perspective, Ahmedabad’s transformation into a global sports hub will elevate the city’s profile, attracting international investments and boosting local industries. The development of sports enclaves and venues is not just a sporting initiative but part of a broader economic strategy aimed at creating jobs, improving public facilities, and elevating quality of life. By 2047, the city plans to evolve into a well-connected metropolis with upgraded rail, road, and air networks, along with enhanced education and healthcare services, positioning itself as a leading global city in India’s Olympic journey.
