Western Railway Raises Standards For Passenger Health
Western Railway has expanded health and hygiene surveillance across its stations, hospitals and railway facilities, testing hundreds of food samples and thousands of drinking-water samples since April. The exercise covers both suburban and non-suburban operations and highlights a less visible part of transport infrastructure: ensuring that the millions using a large rail network can access safe food and potable water during their journeys. The latest monitoring recorded a strong compliance rate across food testing. Of 357 samples examined under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 356 met the prescribed requirements. A separate quality-control programme assessed about 642 samples, with 626 clearing the checks.
Taken together, the figures point to generally high compliance, but the failed samples remain important. Food safety risks can arise anywhere along a supply chain, from preparation and storage to handling at station outlets. Railway authorities have therefore been using measures such as notices, penalties and repeat inspections where shortcomings are identified. The programme has also expanded beyond individual food outlets. Western Railway has secured 64 Eat Right certifications covering 51 stations and 13 railway campuses. The certification process examines areas such as food handling, pest management, waste practices and staff hygiene. For a dense urban transport system, these checks have wider implications. Stations are not simply interchange points; they function as high-footfall public spaces where commuters spend time, purchase food and use basic amenities. Maintaining these facilities is therefore part of the wider quality of urban mobility.
Water surveillance has produced similarly high results. Since April, about 3,879 bacteriological tests have been conducted across the network, with 99.87% recorded as fit. Railway teams also carried out around 33,104 residual-chlorine tests, which help indicate whether adequate disinfection is being maintained in drinking-water systems. Mumbai Division provides a more detailed picture of the challenge. Among suburban stations, 329 of 333 bacteriological samples met potable standards. Of 2,193 residual-chlorine tests, 2,192 were satisfactory. The non-suburban network recorded 381 compliant bacteriological samples, while 3,039 of 3,090 chlorine tests met the required level. The results underline the importance of continuous monitoring rather than one-off inspections. Water quality can change within distribution systems, while food safety depends on daily vendor practices. For Western Railway, maintaining testing, corrective action and transparent follow-up will be essential as passenger volumes remain high.
The approach also has an environmental dimension. Better waste handling, controlled water use and properly maintained sanitation systems can reduce public-health risks while making large transport facilities more resilient. The next measure of progress will be whether high compliance is sustained across the network, particularly at its busiest stations.
