India has initiated the competitive bidding process for a major interstate electricity transmission corridor connecting Bihar and West Bengal, marking another step in strengthening the eastern region’s power network as electricity demand and renewable energy integration continue to rise. The proposed Bihar transmission corridor is expected to improve grid reliability, ease power transfers across state boundaries and support long-term industrial and urban growth in eastern India.
The project, identified as the Eastern Region Expansion Scheme-47 (ERES-47), involves the development of a new 765 kV transmission corridor linking Nawada in Bihar with Durgapur and a proposed Jeerat substation in West Bengal. Authorities have invited global developers to compete for the project under the Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding framework, a model intended to improve transparency and encourage cost-efficient infrastructure delivery. The selected developer will build, own, operate and maintain the asset for the prescribed concession period before transfer under the established framework.For rapidly urbanising states such as Bihar and West Bengal, transmission infrastructure has become increasingly important as cities expand, industries demand uninterrupted electricity and renewable energy projects require stronger evacuation networks. Energy planners note that while electricity generation capacity has grown steadily, transmission systems must keep pace to prevent bottlenecks that could affect consumers, manufacturing clusters and future investments.
The Bihar transmission corridor also reflects a wider national strategy to modernise interstate electricity infrastructure capable of handling larger volumes of renewable power alongside conventional generation. High-capacity transmission lines improve operational flexibility by allowing electricity to move efficiently between regions experiencing varying levels of demand and generation, reducing the risk of local shortages while improving overall grid resilience.Urban development specialists argue that dependable transmission networks increasingly underpin sustainable city planning. Reliable electricity supports public transport systems, healthcare facilities, digital infrastructure, water treatment plants and emerging clean-energy industries. As more states pursue electric mobility, data centres and low-carbon industrial investments, modern transmission corridors become critical infrastructure rather than merely utility assets.Industry experts also point out that competitive procurement can attract technical expertise and private capital while promoting efficient project execution. However, timely land acquisition, environmental clearances and coordination between multiple agencies remain essential to prevent delays that have affected several large infrastructure projects in the past.
The proposed corridor is one of several transmission initiatives being advanced across the country to accommodate growing electricity consumption and accelerate renewable energy integration. As eastern India continues to urbanise and industrialise, strengthening interstate grid connectivity is expected to improve energy security, support economic competitiveness and create a more resilient electricity network capable of serving future cities with lower-carbon power sources.
