West Bengal Dairy Infrastructure Set For Expansion
West Bengal is set to witness one of its largest investments in dairy processing infrastructure as a ₹700-crore integrated facility planned in Howrah aims to become the world’s largest curd production plant. Beyond its scale, the project highlights a broader shift towards strengthening food processing capacity, improving rural supply chains and creating stronger market linkages between farmers and urban consumers.
The proposed dairy complex, to be developed within the Sankrail Food Park in Howrah district, is expected to significantly expand the state’s milk processing capabilities. Publicly available project details indicate the facility will be able to process nearly 30 lakh litres of milk every day while producing up to 10 lakh kilograms of curd and other cultured dairy products daily. Such capacity could reduce post-harvest losses, improve storage efficiency and support a more resilient dairy value chain.Urban planners and food supply experts note that investments in large-scale processing infrastructure can strengthen regional food security by reducing transportation bottlenecks and enabling value addition closer to production centres. Modern cold-chain systems linked to the curd production plant could also improve the shelf life of dairy products, lowering wastage and making distribution more efficient across eastern India. At the same time, the environmental performance of large food-processing facilities will increasingly depend on efficient water management, renewable energy integration and low-carbon logistics.
According to official project information, more than 1.25 lakh milk-producing farmers across West Bengal, including over 30,000 women associated with dairy production, are expected to gain access to organised procurement networks once operations begin. Stable procurement systems can improve income certainty for rural households while encouraging investment in livestock productivity and quality standards.Industry observers believe the development also reflects growing investment in eastern India’s food processing ecosystem, where expanding urban populations are driving demand for packaged and value-added dairy products. Improved processing infrastructure can encourage ancillary businesses including refrigerated transport, packaging, equipment maintenance and warehousing, creating employment opportunities beyond primary agriculture.The project’s location within an established food park could further strengthen industrial clustering by connecting dairy processing with logistics and distribution infrastructure already present in the region. Such integration is increasingly viewed as essential for reducing operational costs while improving market access for producers and retailers alike.
