Central Railway has expanded the number of 15 Car Local Trains operating on Mumbai’s suburban network by upgrading ten existing services from 12-coach formations. The move, effective from Monday, is aimed at easing congestion on some of the busiest commuter routes while increasing passenger carrying capacity without introducing additional train services. The latest operational upgrade includes five services travelling towards Kalyan, Ambernath, Badlapur and Karjat, along with five return services bound for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT). One suburban service has also been converted from a slow to a fast operation as part of the revised timetable, improving connectivity for long-distance suburban commuters.
With these additions, the total number of 15 Car Local Trains on Central Railway has increased from 22 to 32. Each upgraded train adds three extra coaches over the conventional 12-car formation, enabling approximately 25 per cent more passengers to travel on a single service. Railway officials believe the enhancement will help reduce overcrowding during peak travel periods, particularly on the Main Line where commuter demand continues to rise. The expansion has been made possible through a series of infrastructure improvements completed across the Mumbai division. Platform extensions, yard remodelling and operational upgrades have enabled longer train formations to be accommodated safely at stations without disrupting existing services. Transport planners view these investments as essential for maximising the capacity of the suburban railway network within existing track infrastructure. Mumbai’s suburban rail system remains one of the busiest commuter networks in the world, carrying millions of passengers daily. While major projects such as new metro corridors and dedicated suburban infrastructure are expected to diversify urban mobility over time, experts note that incremental upgrades like longer train formations continue to play an important role in addressing immediate capacity constraints.
Urban mobility specialists also point out that increasing passenger capacity through longer trains is generally more cost-effective and environmentally efficient than adding large numbers of new services. Carrying more passengers per trip helps improve energy efficiency, optimise infrastructure utilisation and reduce pressure on already congested rail corridors, contributing to more sustainable public transport operations. However, transport experts caution that longer trains alone cannot fully resolve congestion challenges. Continued investment in signalling upgrades, station modernisation, improved passenger circulation and seamless integration with metro, bus and non-motorised transport systems will be necessary to support Mumbai’s rapidly expanding travel demand. The latest expansion reflects Central Railway’s broader strategy to gradually increase the share of longer suburban services as supporting infrastructure becomes available. Further platform extensions and operational enhancements could enable additional 15 Car Local Trains in the coming years, improving commuter comfort while strengthening the resilience and efficiency of Mumbai’s public transport network.
