West Bengal Campuses Get Statewide Self-Defence Drive for Women

Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad will conduct a three-day self-defence training programme for female students across college and university campuses in West Bengal from November 14 to 16, according to ABVP leaders quoted by PTI.

The programme, titled Mission Sahasi, will be organised across the state. Its stated focus is on physical self-defence techniques and psychological preparedness to help participants respond to difficult or challenging situations.

ABVP, which is affiliated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, announced the initiative on Friday. The available announcement does not specify the number of campuses involved, the locations of the sessions, the instructors conducting the training or the number of students expected to participate this year.

The programme combines practical training with mental preparedness. According to the organisers, participants will be taught techniques intended to help them deal with challenging situations, although further details about the curriculum and training schedule were not provided in the announcement.

Mission Sahasi follows a similar programme held in 2024 at the Sports Authority of India complex in Kolkata. Around 800 students participated in that earlier programme, according to the report. The 2024 event provides the only participation figure cited in the available material and does not establish the expected scale of the statewide programme planned for November.

The announcement places the training on college and university campuses, making the participating institutions central to the programme’s delivery. However, the available information does not identify whether campuses will host separate sessions, how students will register or whether colleges and universities will provide venues and administrative support.

The initiative comes as student safety remains linked not only to personal preparedness but also to how educational institutions organise access, support and emergency responses. In this case, the organisers have described self-defence and psychological preparedness as the programme’s objectives, while details of any coordination with campus administrations or public authorities have not been stated.

The three-day programme is scheduled to begin on November 14 and continue through November 16. Further operational details, including participating campuses, session timings and enrolment arrangements, were not included in the announcement cited by PTI.
