Water Wars Pune Villages Demand Solutions Amid Severe Shortage

The city of Pune finds itself embroiled in a dire water crisis, as residents across various areas struggle with erratic and insufficient water supply.

The recent upheaval in the Ramtekdi area, where frustrated residents resorted to vandalism at the office of the executive engineer of the Camp water supply department, underscores the severity of the situation. Despite repeated pleas and demands for resolution, authorities have yet to provide a sustainable solution to the persistent water shortage plaguing the region. The water scarcity extends beyond Ramtekdi, affecting numerous other areas in Pune. A city-wide water cut on Thursday exacerbated the crisis, with low water pressure leading to clashes among residents vying for access to water tankers in localities such as Bavdhan, Sus, Balewadi, and Lohegaon. Discontent simmers among citizens, who lament unequal and inadequate water distribution by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

In Shivaji Nagar, residents express frustration over years of complaints regarding insufficient water pressure, highlighting the need for immediate improvement. Meanwhile, villages surrounding Pune, including Fursungi, Dhairi, Ambegaon Budruk, and Lohgaon, grapple with erratic water supply, receiving water only every other day or even less frequently. The situation has forced residents to plead for their basic water needs, with the PMC deploying hundreds of water tankers to address the escalating demand. However, challenges persist, as certain tanker drivers illicitly demand payment for their services, despite the PMC providing these tankers free of charge. In response, citizens are urged to report any such incidents to the PMC promptly. Moreover, while initiatives like the common water supply scheme offer hope for long-term solutions in villages like Sus, Mhalunge, and Lohgaon, their implementation awaits the conclusion of the prevailing code of conduct. Pune’s water crisis demands urgent and concerted action from authorities, stakeholders, and residents alike. Addressing the root causes of the shortage, ensuring equitable distribution, and cracking down on illegal practices are crucial steps towards securing a sustainable water future for all.
