Walgreens’ Chennai Tech Centre to Create 250 High-Value Jobs

Walgreens will establish its first Global Capability Centre in India at DLF Downtown in Taramani, Chennai, under a memorandum of understanding signed with the Tamil Nadu government on Friday. The centre is expected to create 250 high-value jobs focused on technology and commerce services.

The MoU was signed in the presence of Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay at the Secretariat. The proposed facility will be the United States-based company’s first GCC in India and will operate from Chennai’s Taramani business district, one of the city’s established technology and commercial office locations.

Walgreens operates in pharmacy services, healthcare and consumer health products in the United States. Its Chennai centre is expected to support technology and commerce-related functions, although the state government and company have not disclosed further details about the specific teams, investment value, operational start date or recruitment timeline.

In a statement, the Tamil Nadu government said the agreement would support its efforts to create more high-value employment in the state. “The MoU is an example of the State emerging as a hub for technology and commerce services,” the statement said.

The proposed centre adds a global healthcare and consumer-health company to Chennai’s expanding corporate services base. Its location at DLF Downtown places the project within a large mixed-use commercial development in Taramani, where the availability of office space and access to the city’s technology workforce are key factors for companies setting up capability centres.

The government said Walgreens decided to establish its first Global Capability Centre in India after choosing Chennai as its location. The agreement was described as the first MoU signed after Chief Minister Vijay returned from London, where the state said his maiden visit resulted in investment proposals worth Rs 15,300 crore.

According to the state government, the projects linked to those proposals are expected to create more than 10,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities. The government did not provide a project-wise break-up of that employment estimate or indicate how the Walgreens centre’s 250 positions would be distributed across technology and commerce functions.

Industries Minister S Keerthana, Chief Secretary M Sai Kumar and Additional Chief Secretary of the department S Vijayakumar attended the MoU signing. The next steps for the Walgreens centre, including implementation milestones and recruitment announcements, were not specified in the statement.
